BER is increasingly using lanes equipped with the new CT scanners at security contros and is adapting its procedures to passengers’ behaviour.
Following the Whitsun weekend, on 26 May 2026, the booking of time slots for the BER Runway – an additional access point to security control – will be discontinued. The reason for this is the significantly increased appeal of the new screening lanes: since Areas 1 and 5 in Terminal 1 were fully equipped with modern CT technology, the BER Runway has been used less and less.
Last month alone, 90 per cent of all passengers who had booked a slot for the BER Runway did not use it and opted at short notice for the new, comfortable and efficient security controls. At the lanes with CT scanners, liquids of up to two litres per person are permitted and, like electronic devices, no longer need to be unpacked.
The BER Runway was introduced in August 2022 and the number of slots has been repeatedly adjusted in line with demand. The security lanes featuring the BER Runway in the central area of Terminal 1 are still equipped with conventional X-ray technology. There, only liquids in containers of up to 100 ml are permitted and must – just like electronic devices – be removed from hand luggage. These lanes will also be fitted with new scanners; the equipment has already been ordered and the refurbishment will begin in the autumn.
Passengers can use a total of 24 lanes with modern security technology in Terminals 1 and 2. Information on waiting times at all security controls can be found on the website, in the BER app and on the monitors on site at BER. All security controls lead to every gate.
