No connection abroad? Not with us.
Anyone who travels abroad is familiar with the problem: high roaming charges, the hassle of buying a local SIM card, or unreliable, slow Wi-Fi connections often make it difficult to stay online at all times. Especially after landing, you want to start navigating, sending messages or accessing important information straight away – without any hassle and without hidden costs. With the BER eSIM, that’s a thing of the past: you’re online straight away, without having to swap physical SIM cards.

How does eSIM work?
Questions and Answers
Below you will find useful information on the most frequently asked questions about eSIMs at BER Airport. Here you can find answers regarding purchase, activation, use, compatibility and other important topics for your trip.
An eSIM (also known as an e-SIM card) is a digital SIM card that is permanently integrated into your smartphone or tablet. Unlike a traditional SIM card, there is no need to insert a physical card. Instead, you simply download your chosen data plan to your device using a QR code. Once installed, you can start using mobile data straight away and go online whilst abroad.
With an eSIM, you can enjoy a particularly simple way to use mobile data. You don’t need an additional SIM card, so you avoid expensive data roaming charges. Activation is quick and straightforward, and you retain full control over your costs at all times. What’s more, you can continue to use your existing SIM card at the same time.
Buying before your trip gives you the greatest peace of mind when planning. You can install the eSIM before you leave and be online as soon as you land. This way, you avoid long queues, unreliable Wi-Fi connections or having to buy a local SIM card abroad. Especially when arriving in a new country, it’s helpful to be able to access navigation, transport apps or important information straight away.
eSIMs are supported by many modern devices. These include, for example, iPhones from the XS/XR model onwards, numerous Samsung Galaxy models, and Google Pixel devices. It is important that your device is eSIM-compatible and not locked to a mobile network operator (no SIM lock).
We recommend checking your device’s technical specifications before making a purchase.
Yes, most devices support the use of two SIM profiles at the same time (dual SIM). You can continue to use your physical SIM card for calls and text messages whilst using the eSIM for mobile data abroad. This means you can still be reached on your usual number.
Most eSIM plans are data-only plans. This means they do not include a separate phone number for traditional calls or text messages. However, you can still use internet-based services such as WhatsApp, FaceTime, Skype or other messaging apps without any problems.
The eSIM can be installed immediately after purchase. Actual activation depends on the specific tariff plan. In many cases, it is advisable to activate the eSIM shortly before departure or immediately after landing to make the most of the service period.
Yes, as soon as you arrive in your destination country and the SIM card is activated, your device will automatically connect to a local mobile network. You can then start using mobile data straight away without having to make any further settings.
Availability depends on the plan you choose. eSIMs are available for individual countries, for entire regions such as Europe or Asia, and for worldwide use. Before purchasing, you can check exactly which countries are included in the relevant package.
The validity period depends on the data package booked. Typical durations are 7, 15 or 30 days. The validity period begins when the service is first used in the destination country, not at the time of purchase.
Once you have used up your allocated data allowance, your internet connection will usually be interrupted or throttled. You can then top up with an additional data package or purchase a new eSIM to stay online.
If you encounter any issues, please first check that the eSIM has been installed correctly and review your device settings (e.g. ensure mobile data is enabled and the correct eSIM is selected). Connection issues can often be resolved quickly. If you continue to experience difficulties, Airalo Customer Service is available to assist you.
