T.O., as Toronto is affectionately known, is cosmopolitan, creative and diverse. Canada's largest city is located on the northwestern shore of Lake Ontario in the southeastern province of the same name. Downtown Toronto boasts a spectacular skyline of modern skyscrapers blending harmoniously with historic buildings. The city's most famous landmark is the CN Tower. At 553 metres, it was the tallest freestanding tower in the world when it opened in 1976. The views from the tower over Lake Ontario and the city are spectacular. A glass floor provides an additional thrill with views into the depths below. Toronto is known for its ethnic diversity and vibrant hippie neighbourhoods. From Little Tibet to Koreatown and Chinatown, you can take a trip around the world by tram or on foot. The city also offers a wide range of museums and events that enrich cultural life. These include the Royal Ontario Museum and the Art Gallery of Ontario. In the Distillery District, galleries have been set up in old whisky distilleries.
Endless nature, deep forests, unspoiled wilderness and more than 250,000 lakes characterise the province of Ontario, which lies between Hudson Bay and the Great Lakes. While the city of Toronto, with a population of over one million, attracts visitors with its vibrant metropolitan flair, Ontario also appeals to active holidaymakers and nature lovers. Day trips from Toronto include world-famous Niagara Falls, the wine country of the Niagara Peninsula and the theatre town of Stratford. A three-hour drive north of Toronto, Algonquin Provincial Park is an outdoor enthusiast's paradise, with hiking trails and an extensive network of waterways ideal for canoeing and kayaking.
The chances of seeing moose, bear or beaver are high. The Thousand Islands National Park on the St. Lawrence River also offers magnificent natural experiences and an impressive river landscape with countless islands.
