Cairo – The City of the Pyramids

Published: 15 December 2023, 13:00

Cairo is the capital of Egypt and definitely a city of superlatives. With more than 22 million inhabitants, it is the largest city in the Arab world and ranks seventh in the global city rankings. The North African megacity on the Nile is a feast for the senses: bustling markets like the Khan el-Khalili, loud muezzin calls from thousands of minarets like those at the Muhammad Ali Mosque, and culinary diversity make lasting impressions.

The Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square offers a deep insight into the history of the land of the pharaohs. Historic Cairo, also known as Islamic Cairo, forms the city centre and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The elevated Al-Azhar Park not only offers somewhere to relax, it also has an impressive panoramic view over the Old Town. An absolute must is a visit to the Sphinx and Pyramids of Giza, the oldest surviving Wonder of the World.

Around Cairo: Egypt’s historical treasures

The world-famous pyramids south of Cairo in Giza are the oldest and only remaining Wonder of the Ancient World. All three pyramids and their elaborate tombs were built between around 2550 and 2490 BC. The Great Pyramid (Cheops Pyramid) is the largest in Giza and is around 147 metres tall. The ancient royal tombs guarded by the Sphinx are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Due to their great popularity, it is advisable to visit the pyramids early in the morning and avoid weekends.

Not far from the pyramid complex is the Grand Egyptian Museum, opening in December – home to the world’s largest archaeological collection. More ancient buildings, temples and pyramids can be visited in Memphis, Sakkara and Dashur. All three places are located south of Cairo and can easily be visited together on a day trip. Those interested in ancient Egyptian architecture and architectural wonders have come to the right place.
