Although the Bosnian city of Tuzla is not a classic ‘bucket list destination’, it has a charm all of its own: it is more relaxed than other European cities and significantly less touristy, which makes a stay there particularly authentic. Almost everything is within easy walking distance. In the heart of the old town lies Freedom Square, lined with charming cafés and restaurants that invite you to relax and linger.
The city in the north-east of Bosnia and Herzegovina was a centre of salt production for centuries. The name Tuzla is derived from the Turkish word ‘tuz’ for salt. This tradition is particularly evident at the Pannonian Salt Lakes, a local recreation area right in the heart of the city. Daily life unfolds around the Korzo pedestrian zone: here, locals enjoy their beloved coffee culture, go shopping and chat. Places such as the Kapija Memorial and the Museum of Eastern Bosnia serve as reminders of the region’s turbulent history.
From Tuzla, there are plenty of varied excursions to be had in the surrounding area. One destination well worth a visit is Doboj with its historic fortress. A visit to Srebrenik is particularly worthwhile because of the medieval castle, which offers fascinating insights into the history of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Lake Modrac is a wonderful destination for walks, cycle rides and relaxing by the water. To the south of Tuzla lie the Konjuh Mountains with their beautiful hiking trails. The Majevica Mountains offer routes for easier hikes. Those wishing to experience the region even more fully can visit traditional villages along the way or sample local specialities such as freshly baked ‘burek’. In this way, nature, history and culture combine to create a varied experience around Tuzla.
