Winter adventures in Finland

In winter, Kuusamo looks like something out of a fairy tale: snow-covered forests, frozen lakes and vast, tranquil landscapes characterise the region of North Ostrobothnia, south of Lapland in north-eastern Finland. With a bit of luck, on clear nights the Northern Lights dance across the sky – a magical spectacle.

Kuusamo is the gateway to the Ruka ski resort, which, with 41 ski runs and 19 kilometres of slopes, offers guaranteed snow right through to April. If you’re looking to experience a Scandinavian-style winter holiday on the Arctic Circle, this is the place for you. Away from the slopes, Kuusamo also offers fairytale winter adventures in Oulanka National Park and Riisitunturi National Park: snowshoe hikes through snow-covered forests, husky safaris across frozen lakes or reindeer sleigh rides through the vast, silent wilderness. There’s no better way to round off an active day than in a traditional Finnish sauna.

Winter adventures in the far north

Natural highlights around Kuusamo

Kuusamo is situated in north-eastern Finland on the southern border of Finnish Lapland. This makes it an ideal base for trips to other destinations in northern Finland, as well as for day trips into the surrounding area, which is rich in lakes and forests. An absolute highlight north of Kuusamo is Oulanka National Park: deep gorges, snow-covered forests and wild rivers characterise the landscape. The powerful rapids at Kiutaköngäs are particularly well known. Also, north of Kuusamo, Riisitunturi National Park offers magical experiences in winter. The fell landscape, with its slopes and thickly snow-covered fir trees, is a paradise for hiking enthusiasts. Another beautiful destination for hiking or boating is the Julma-Ölkky Canyon with the lake of the same name south of Kuusamo. Steep rock faces, clear water and tranquillity characterise this magnificent area in Hossa National Park.
