The capital of Georgia is the centre of the country. Around 1.2 million people, a good third of the country’s population, live there. Located in the east of the country, surrounded by the impressive Caucasus Mountains, the city is the country’s economic and cultural centre. It offers a variety of fascinating sights. The Old Town enchants visitors with its striking architecture, colourful, sometimes slightly crooked houses and picturesque little streets. The ruins of the Narikala fortress are not only worth seeing, they also offer breathtaking views of Tbilisi and the River Kura, which flows through the city. The 20-metre-high statue of Kartlis Deda (Mother of Georgia) can be admired in the immediate vicinity of the castle. The sulphuric hot springs are a special feature of the city. In addition to the strategically favourable location along the east-west trade routes, these had a major influence on the founding of the city at this location. The Abanotubani spa district with its sulphur baths invites you to immerse yourself in the history of the city in the truest sense of the word. The lively Freedom Square is a popular meeting place with numerous cafés and shops that invite you to stay and linger. The Georgian National Museum houses an impressive collection of artefacts that bring the history and culture of Georgia to life.
