Helsinki – The white city of the north

Published: 10 March 2023, 11:30

Helsinki is often referred to as the “white city of the north” because of its magnificent, classical buildings. In addition to historic buildings, the Nordic metropolis scores points with its modern architecture and minimalist design highlights. Helsinki is a wonderful place to explore on foot or by bike. Many places worth seeing, such as the cathedral, the harbour and the Uspenski Cathedral, are close together.

Helsinki is often referred to as the “daughter of the Baltic Sea” because of its geographical location. No matter where you are, the water and the impressive coastline are not far away. Therefore, a boat trip along the beautiful shorelines is one of the highlights of a visit to the city. There are many popular places waiting to be discovered from the water, such as the fortress island of Suomenlinna, Korkeasaari Zoo and the Merisatama harbour district.

Around Helsinki

If you have a little more time, explore the area around Helsinki for more nature, peace and seclusion. This could be a trip to the Helsinki archipelago, which consists of around 330 islands. A short ferry ride and you’re surrounded by green forests, sandy beaches and coastline. Nuuksio National Park is home to unspoilt nature with lush forests and diverse plant species. There are various hiking and cycling trails as well as lakes that can be explored by canoe. If you want to experience the real Finnish way of life, you can’t miss a trip to the sauna. In addition to the saunas in the city, it's worth taking a trip to the Kuusijärvi leisure centre. Dive straight into the lake of the same name after the sauna.
